The son of German-born Christian & fnu. (King) Shady, his whereabouts in 1850 and 1860 remain unknown as he is not found in either census, although it may be surmised that in 1864, he was living in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, region. Later in life, he was a blacksmith by trade.

A Civil War veteran, please note that the company and regimental combination on the tombstone is erroneous. He enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia March 9, 1865, as an unassigned private with the 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry. On or about June 22, 1865, with the dissolution of the 203rd Pennsylvania, he transferred to Co. B, 76th Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.

He died at his home from "paralysis" with 'legrippe" a contributing factor.
