The son of Irish-born William & Pennsylvania-born Sarah (Kerr) Haney, his whereabouts in 1860 is unknown as he is not found in any census until 1880. Presumably, he was living in or near Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Harrisburg February 7, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with Co. C, 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865.

He married Elizabeth Ann Smith ca. 1870 and fathered Margaret (b. 02/09/71 - married a Bowker), Jennie (b. 07/16/73 - married Robert T. Schweppe), Nelzona (b. @1875), Charles P. (b. 10/30/77), Sarah L. @1879), Mary (b. 03/??/81), John Steward (b. 01/15/85), George William (b. 02/25/88), and Bruce (b. 02/??/92). Cause of his death is listed as "chronic myocarditis, fibroid heart & general edema" with "bronchial asthma" a contributing factor.
