Captain Elmer Krueger of the Merrill Police Department was shot in the line of duty on July 12, 1952 and died at Holy Cross Hospital a week later. He was a proud member of the Merrill Police Department rising to the rank of Captain in only a few short years. He left behind a young wife and two young children.

He was the only Merrill Police Officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty.
