Chickasaw Nation Governor. Jonas Wolf was born in the present day De Soto County, Mississippi, on June 30 1828. He was the son of Captain James Wolf, a Chickasaw Indian and signer of the Treaty of 1832. His family relocated to Doaksville in the removal of 1838. He established a farm along the north bank of the Washita, west of Tishomingo, Oklahoma. As he grew older he became a member of the Presbyterian church, and later a minister. He was a member of the Chickasaw tribal legislature and became the governor of the Chickasaw Nation in 1884. He served 2 terms 1884-1886 and 1892-1894. As a Chickasaw leader, he was known for his rugged integrity. He was a full-blood Chickasaw, and he could not speak or understand English. He had an interpreter with him most of his governorship. Governor Jonas Wolf died on January 14, 1900 and was buried in a family burial ground on the farm where he lived most of his life.
