Isaac Ferris, one of Wisconsin River's pioneer river pilots and one of Stevens Point's earliest settlers. He was born in Pennsylvania and was a man of considerable intelligence. He was a river pilot during the days before the civil war and was well known along the river to local pioneers and travelers. Isaac died in 1862 and was buried near his home, a large shanty near Conant Rapids. Although he did not keep an inn, Isaac nevertheless offered grateful travelers over night boarding.

Sometime around 1856 Isaac Ferris married Mrs Elizabeth C (Story) Kelly. They had one child, Laura M Ferris. Mrs Elizabeth Ferris died before 1860 and when Isaac Ferris subsequently died in 1862, Laura was left an orphan and sent to Illinois to be raised by her uncle, Edwin Ferris. Locals remembered the little girl living in the area and attending school at the 'local shanty school house' at the 'head of Clark street near the cemetery in the eastern part of the city.'
