Nathaniel was wounded on the first day of the battle of Fredricksburg. Barksdale's Brigade was sent across the Rappahannock River into the town of Fredricksburg to scout and detain the federals until General Lee's army could prepare for battle. Instead of pulling back Barksdale chose to engage the approaching enemy. Quite a battle developed and both sides suffered casualties. The Brigade was forced to wait until darkness to recross the river to safety. In the following days the Union Army commanded by General Ambrose Burnside crossed the river under heavy fire and attacked General Lee's well prepared Army Of Northern Virginia. The bloody battle that followed was one of the biggest victories for the South. The North's casualties were over 12,500. The Southern Army lost a few over 5000 men. General Burnside was later released as Commander of the Army of the Potomac.
