PITTSFIELD -- John J. Curtis Sr., 78, passed away on Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, following a brief illness.
He was born on Feb. 26, 1929, in Corinna to Relsie and Nellie (Ham) Curtis.
Much of his life was spent in public service, having served for many years with the Pittsfield Police Department as a patrol officer and dispatcher, Pittsfield Fire Department, the Somerset Sheriff's Department as a deputy and court officer, and as a Humane Agent for the State of Maine Department of Animal Welfare. In his later years John served as a volunteer driver for the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program. He was a past member of the IOOF Rebekah Lodge. John was always a hard worker and most of his life worked two and sometimes three jobs to support his large family.
Aside from all his dedication and hard work, John's passion in life was his family. He raised nine kids, who went on to give him many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Mildred Thurlow of Bass Harbor; his brother, State Trooper Relsie Curtis Jr. of Bingham; and a grandson, Daniel True of Pittsfield.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Elizabeth (Cole); his daughters, Dianne and husband Frank Roy, Bonnie and the late Stephen Brown, Sue and husband Charlie Armstrong, Laurie and husband Neal Bryson, all of Pittsfield; Kathie and husband Ned Hood of Palmyra, and Barbara and husband Paul St. Jean of Lewiston. His sons, John Jr. and wife Bonnie; Richard; Pete and wife Ramona, all of Pittsfield, Chuck and wife Laurie of Scarborough; and Pat Bush and wife Cheryl of Sangerville, and many nieces and nephews.
John was a man who was easily loved by many and made friends with everyone he came into contact with. His life brought much joy to those who knew him. He always saw the positive in people, and was always there with a warm smile and helping hand. He will be missed very, very much by his family and everyone who knew him.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the nursing staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer second floor and Seton Rehab units, and well as the staff at Cedar-Ridge Nursing Care Center in Skowhegan for the excellent care they provided.
Funeral services will be held at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave. in Pittsfield on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. with visiting hours starting at 11 a.m., with burial following at Pittsfield Village Cemetery.
