Marcelo Pérez del Castillo Ferreira, born on March 26, 1947, in Montevideo, Uruguay, was an esteemed graduate of Stella Maris school in the Carrasco neighborhood of Montevideo.

Serving as captain and a central figure in the Old Christians Club - Rugby's first team, Marcelo played a pivotal role in coordinating the expedition to Chile. His leadership was evident both on the field and during critical moments, such as the plane crash in the Andes.

Post the incident, Marcelo, despite sustaining only minor injuries, emerged as the natural leader among the survivors. His adept decision-making for the collective welfare and unwavering dedication to managing scarce resources garnered the respect and admiration of all group members.

Despite his initial optimism, the news of the suspension of search efforts profoundly affected Marcelo's emotional well-being. From that point onward, he endeavored to uphold the group's morale but, regrettably, succumbed to the emotional toll and could not recover.

Marcelo Pérez del Castillo passed away on October 29, 1972, at the young age of 25, alongside 7 other surviving companions, victims of an avalanche that buried the fuselage of the Fairchild 571.

His life and experiences were immortalized in the film "The Society of Snow" (J.A. Bayona, 2023), where actor Diego Vegezzi portrayed Marcelo Pérez del Castillo, highlighting his courage and leadership in extreme circumstances.
