In telling the stories of Burge, Laws and Stark, they give insight to the mission of William C. Quantrill and his guerrillas against the Kansans during the Civil War. William Burge was a 20 year old man living in his father's log cabin at Elmwood Avenue and Spuce in Kansas City, Mo. On November 22, 1861, the Kansas RedLegs had crossed the border into Missouri with intent of terrorizing Jackson County citizens by plundering, killing and burning. Burge was kidnapped from his father's doorway and taken by the RedLegs into the east bottoms area where he was shot and killed in cold blood. To our knowledge, based on a Kansas City Star article written some years ago, no Confederate service has ever been held at his grave as the family had wanted so many years ago.
