Worker killed when struck by lightning
A rural Pittsville man struck by lightning while working on construction of a metal building in the Wisconsin Rapids Industrial Park died in the intensive care unit at Riverview Hospital at 5:30 pm Thursday.
Vincent Macha, 33, Rt. 2, Pittsville, was hit in the chest by a bolt of lightning about 3:17 pm Thursday while working on a building at 2321 Jefferson St. He fell about 15 feet from the roof of the building to the ground, police said. James Peters, 941 10th Ave. N, was also working on the roof of the building and said the concussion of the strike almost knocked him to his feet, he told police.
Both men were employees of Metal Building Services, Inc., Pittsville, and were placing roof sheeting on the building being constructed for plumbing and realty firms, police said.
Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and closed heart massage were administered by police, firefighters and other persons, and the man began to breathe on his own, police reported.
He was then transported to Riverview by Wisconsin Rapids ambulance and was admitted in critical condition at 3:40 pm. A firefighter said the lightning struck Macha in the chest, traveled along his side and through his shoe into the building, burning the man's foot.
Funeral services were tentatively set for Monday, with visitation on Sunday. Higgins & Sons Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
