Nadine Pillot Cuenod, 100, passed away Friday, August 25, 2000 at her home in Houston. "Deenie" or "Gramom" as she was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was born in Houston to Teolin and Anna Drescher Pillot. Deenie and her older siblings Eugene and Marguerite were raised by their parents at their house on McKinney and Chenevert. The Pillot House now sits as a historic landmark in Sam Houston Park. Deenie was married in 1925 to the late Dr. Emile M. Cuenod.
In addition to being a loving, loveable and feisty wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Deenie gave nearly 84 years of public service to the American Red Cross and the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. As a teenager, she volunteered for the Red Cross by knitting caps, socks and sweaters for the troops in World War I. In 1958, in conjunction with the Red Cross, Deenie began volunteering at the Veteran's Administration by supervising the "Gray Lady Program." This group supplies hospitalized veterans with day-to-day necessities to make their stay more comfortable including writing letters and performing small tasks for the patients. Most important, the Gray Ladies would lend a friendly ear to the veterans who were often lonely, without relatives, and, in many cases, terminally ill. Deenie viewed this work as the most compelling, demanding and rewarding. Deenie's volunteer work continued until her retirement at age 99. In 1992, she received the Mayor's Volunteer Award and over the years received countless other awards, proclamations and commendations. Embarrassed by such attention, she preferred spending her non-working time with her family and friends. Deenie was also a voracious reader, an accomplished bridge player and a captivating storyteller.
She is survived by her three children, Louanne Cuenod Sullivan, E. Marc Cuenod and wife Martha, Ronald P. Cuenod and wife Barbara Ann; grandchildren Bill Sullivan and wife Terri, Susanne Sullivan, Mark Sullivan, Katie Sullivan Molina and husband Raul, Amy Sullivan Holland and husband Bill, Carol Cuenod Vickery and husband Andy, Marc Cuenod, Jr. and wife Julie, Annie Cuenod, Diane Cuenod Wantland and husband Robin, Donna Cuenod Griffin and husband Randy, Ronald Cuenod, Jr., and wife Dorothy, Rene Cuenod and wife Gloria, Mona Cuenod Mengler and husband Tom, and Judy Cuenod Grigsby and husband Russell; and 31 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 in the chapel at St. John The Divine Episcopal Church, with The Rev. Douglas W. Richnow officiating. Memorials may be made to the Greater Houston Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.
