Posey was a 1936 graduate of Bald Knob High School in Frankfort and a 1940 graduate of Georgetown College. Posey received his Masters of Divinity from Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Franklin College. Posey started his ministry as pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church in Columbus, IN. Then he was called to serve as a missionary and was sent by the American Baptist Mission Society to the Philippines. He and his family served in the Philippines for four and a half years. After returning to the United States, Posey served as pastor in numerous churches including First Baptist Churches in Jeffersonville, Peru and Anderson, IN. He then served on the staff for American Baptist Churches of Indiana and Kentucky until his retirement. After his retirement, Posey was the interim pastor for First Baptist Church and American Baptist East, both in Evansville and also churches in Vincennes, Washington, Peru and Jeffersonville. He was a member of Blazing Star Masonic Lodge #226 in Charlestown, IN, Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree Mason.

Posey was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid golfer but what he enjoyed most was visits to his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Geraldine "Gerri" (Williams) Gaines of Evansville, daughters, Debbie Shealy (Luther) of Richmond, VA, Barb Hunsucker (Devin) of Evansville and Clarissa Brindle (Rick) of Peosta, IA, son, H. Posey Gaines, Jr. (Vicki) of Broken Arrow, OK, sister, Bernice Moore of Frankfort, KY, brother, Harvey Gaines, Jr. of Frankfort, KY, grandchildren, Todd Hunsucker, Keri Key, Craig Shealy, Justin Posey Gaines, Kysa Rowe, Nicolas Brindle, Jacob Brindle and Jessica Morris and nine great-grandchildren. Posey was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Lucille Pulliam and Mary Duvall and brothers, George and John Gaines.
