Mary Lou (Rogers) Mace was a unique and special lady. With a sweet temperament and a kind disposition, Mary enhanced our world and made it a better place. Devoted to her family, her love for her husband and son was as bright as the moon, as beautiful as a sunset and as everlasting as her faith. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of Pauline (Huggins) and Robert Rogers, Mary Lou had one older sister, Betty Jean. Mary Lou graduated from Wiley High School in Terre Haute, Indiana. While a young lady in Terre Haute, she met a young man named Bill Mace who was on leave from the United States Army. The date of their meeting was New Year's Eve, 1951. They began a friendship that blossomed into romance and Bill gave Mary Lou an engagement ring on New Year's Eve, 1954. This happy couple married on New Year's Eve, 1955.
Bill became a teacher so Bill and Mary Lou relocated to Evansville, Indiana where Bill began his teaching career at North High School. Mary Lou was a happy homemaker and loving wife. Bill and Mary Lou celebrated as they welcomed their only son, Thomas into the family fold. Mary Lou welcomed motherhood with a warm smile and much enthusiasm. She was her son, Tom's, most avid fan. She encouraged him to use all his talents and to work hard. She was proud of his musical abilities. In the kitchen, Mary Lou was an excellent cook, fixing meatloaf, chili and fried chicken for her little family. When Mary Lou and Bill went to visit Bill's parents, Mary Lou baked her mother-in-law, Ellen, an angel food cake from scratch with white icing. Mary Lou won her mother-in-law's heart with the homemade cake. Ellen told her son, Bill, "I finally have a daughter!!"
Mary Lou loved children and spent 12 years babysitting for many children whose parents worked with Bill. She was such a kind and loving sitter that she didn't need to advertise; her reputation as a great sitter was her best advertisement. Many of the children she took care of still send Christmas Cards to Mary Lou and Bill. Talented with a needle, Mary Lou sewed counted cross stitch and hooked rugs. She created a lovely Christmas tree skirt which wrapped around the Mace's

Christmas tree every year. When Bill worked at Robert's Stadium as the supervisor of the ushers, Mary Lou helped him by being an usher. Someone asked her how she got that easy job, and she quickly told them that she slept with the boss!!

As a couple, Bill and Mary Lou were loyal members of their church. First Baptist Church was home to this couple for over 50 years. Together they enjoyed trips to Branson, Missouri, as well as Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina to see family. They bowled on a senior bowling league at Franklin Lanes. Mary Lou loved listening to the music of the Gaither's, Neil Diamond and especially Frank Sinatra, whom she saw in concert three times. Bill and Mary Lou owned two toy fox terriers named Freckles and Missy. When Marcia Yockey came on the TV, Missy did not like her--so she continually barked until she was put outside. Missy was fine after Marcia was off the TV. Missy also liked green beans and pizza, an unusual diet for a dog. During quiet times Mary Lou liked to watch Soap Operas. She was an avid Word Search fanatic. She always had her Word Search book with her.
