EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Ruth C. McMillen, 92, of Evansville passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010, CORE Nursing & Rehabilitation. She was born Feb. 1, 1918, in Evansville.
Ruth grew up in St. Paul's United Church of Christ, was confirmed and taught Sunday school. Ruth later became a member of First Baptist Church for 50-plus years and was Junior High superintendent, Junior High youth director, moderator, assistant treasurer and treasurer and chairwoman of the board of trustees.
She was a graduate of Reitz High School and attended the University of Evansville, where she took classes in business, and the Savings and Loan Institution of Banking and Business. Ruth was a speaker at different organizations in the city and Harrison High School on administration management, family budgeting and credit and finance.
Ruth was a corporate secretary of Mid-West Federal Savings and Loan and was its first employee. She worked there for 46½ years before retiring.
She was a Welborn Baptist Hospital board member, assistant secretary and member of the Hospital Executive Committee. She retired as emertius Board of Directors Finance Committee and YWCA as president and treasurer. She was on the United Way Allocations Committee and Girl Scouts.
Mayor Vandeveer and the city of Evansville gratefully acknowledged her volunteer service to this community in 1980.
She was a charter member of the Evansville Women's Bowling League, for which she served as president. She was also a member of the Indiana Amateur Fast Pitch Softball Team as catcher, which was the team that won seven championships out of 10 years.
Ruth had been a season ticketholder of UE and USI basketball.
She was an avid reader and loved to travel.
Ruth is survived by her sister-in-law, Eloise McMillen; nieces, Marjorie Cummings, Cathy Istwan and Rita Martin; nephews, Harold McMillen, Jerry McMillen, Dennis Perry and Kelvin Perry; great-nieces; great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and companion, Mary E. Tharp.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. George Huffsmith, with burial at Locust Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Tuesday from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
