CARTHAGE — A small police department is in a state of shock and grieving after one of their own was killed in the line of duty early Tuesday morning.

When officers arrived at the scene on U.S. Highway 79 shortly after 12 a.m. Tuesday, they found 23-year-old Everett Dennis had died from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident.

For 32 years, Carthage Police Chief Duane Baushke has put on his badge to uphold the law during his enforcement career. He has arrested dangerous criminals, worked accidents and for the past few years he has served as the police chief. But in an interview with the Tyler Morning Telegraph Tuesday, the chief said this was the most difficult thing he has had to do since becoming an officer.
