Heavy Metal Musician. Cheng, a bass player, joined the Deftones shortly after the band formed in 1988. The following year he began attending California State University in Sacramento while he wrote poetry and played with the band on and off campus. He played and recorded on the groups albums 'Adrenaline' (1995), 'Around the Fur' (1997), 'White Pony' (2000), 'Deftones' (2003) and 'Saturday Night Wrist' (2006). In 2000, he wrote a collection of poetry titled 'The Bamboo Parachute' which was released as a spoke word album. On November 4, 2008, he suffered severe injuries when he was ejected from a car in which he was a passenger that flipped three times after hitting another car going 60 mph. The accident left him in a coma. Cheng, who was in a partially conscious state, having the ability to move his legs on command but was unable to move independently or speak in sentences, died when his heart suddenly stopped after he was rushed to a local hospital.
