Verna A. Barlett, 959 E. State St., Sharon, formerly of Sharpsville, died of infirmities at 5:42 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2009, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 99.


Mrs. Barlett was born Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1909, in Transfer to the late Allen and Annie (Landfried) Diefenderfer.

She graduated from the former Penn High School, Greenville.

Mrs. Barlett worked as a clerk at the former Sharon Store for 10 years.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sharpsville.

Mrs. Barlett enjoyed crafts, cooking and camping, and was active in her church's organizations.

She was the widow of Edward H. Barlett, whom she married Jan. 25, 1928. He passed away July 9, 1987.

She is survived by: two sons, Robert W. (Florence) Barlett, Austin; and Verne E. (Celeste) Barlett, Pymatuning Township; four grandsons, Martin Barlett, Austin; Gregory Barlett, Brunswick, Ohio; Douglas Barlett, Pymatuning Township; and Jeffrey Barlett, South Pymatuning Township; a granddaughter, Susan Holzer, Austin; and nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Allen Diefenderfer; her sisters, Margaret Dunkerly, Edith Diefenderfer, Flossie Stewart, Nora Hall, Anna Urmson, Ruby Stuver and Mary McKnight; a grandson, Michael Barlett; and a great-grandson, William Barlett.

Calling hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday (3-5-09) in DONALDSON-MOHNEY FUNERAL HOME, 124 Main St., Sharpsville.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday (3-6-09) at the funeral home with the Rev. Ralph Cotten, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Sharpsville, officiating.

Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
