Western Outlaw. Born in Jackson County, Missouri, before entering a life of crime he served as a Deputy Marshal in Wichita, Kansas, keeping the peace in the Osage Nation. In 1890, after he and his brother Emmett Dalton were accused of selling whiskey to Indians, he abandoned his lawful ways, went New Mexico Territory where he formed the Dalton Gang. Recognized as the leader, for the next two years he with his brothers along with various associates began their campaign of larceny, robbing banks, trains and killing anyone who opposed them or stood in their way. On October 5, 1892, while robbing a bank in Coffeyville, Kansas, he with his brother Grattan and two other members of the Dalton Gang died in the ensuing gunfight.
