Racehorse. The 10th Triple Crown Winner, he was known as "The People's Horse." He was the legendary winner of the 1977 Triple Crown who became one of racing's greatest sires. Purchased for only $17,500, he won 14 of 17 races and earned $1,208,726 during his career. In retirement he sired nearly 1,000 colts earning fees well over $100,000 per mare. He died 25 years to the day of his Kentucky Derby victory. One of only 11 Triple Crown winners, he was the only one to complete the Triple Crown in an undefeated record (9-0) up to that accomplishment. He was also the only Triple Crown winner to be purchased at a public auction. 1984 Kentucky Derby/Belmont champ Swale, 1992 Belmont champ AP Indy and Slew of Gold are among his progeny, which included 102 stakes winners at the time of his death, with 40 foals due later in 2002.
