Scotty Mac (Suzie's Scottish MacAttack, AKC # RB294108; son of Part-Time Swab, RA967755, and Lemieux's Classy Lassy, RB014800), was my wife's dog (a 1988 Christmas present) and my last bachelor roommate who moved in with me when he was 8 weeks old, 8 months before I married Susan Mutter. He lived with me for the rest of his entire life. He loved to play in the bathtub or stand on the top step of my Mother-in-law's pool trying to bite the water with which she splashed him. He gained immense joy from simple things like riding next to me in my 1987 or 1994 Ford Ranger trucks, or playing in the bath tub. He would attempt to dig a hole through the bottom of the tub and would splash water everywhere. If he happened to hear the engine fire up on the Ford Ranger or the water running in the bath tub, he would come running, and would pout intensely if not allowed to ride or play in the tub. He loved my wife's bisquits and was gifted at making them disappear off the coffee table if one was careless enough to leave them there. My wife would occasionally leave him a few bisquits on the coffee table and watch his approach, his technique of gentlely tugging the table cloth until the bisquits would fall on to the floor, his stalk toward them if he was satisfied no one was watching or would get mad, and his casual nose nudge to push them under the table where he could eat unobserved and unmolested. He gave her lots of entertainment. Mac loved Christmas and had an uncanny ability to find and remove his packages from under the tree. I found his presents opened in the middle of the floor on several occasions and would end up storing them in the bedroom closet until Christmas Eve. He also had a stuffed penguin that he considered a mortal foe and would attack it on sight, usually in the livingroom or bedroom. He would seize it, growl threateningly, and shake it vigorously as if trying to kill it, and when it slapped either side of his head from the shaking, he would think the penguin was fighting back and would shake it harder and growl louder. He finally "killed it" (tore it open) before Christmas 1997, and was not interested in any stuffed toys thereafter. He circled me with joy when I walked through the front door after coming home from the Gulf War in 1991 and Bosnia in 1997. Mac was often restless at night and would want to go outside between 0001 and 0200. He usually would not want to return to the house until he had barked for 15-20 minutes and would have every dog in the neighborhood barking. When he thought he had stirred up the neighborhood enough, he would return home and go back to sleep. (That often made me wonder what kind of taunts or insults he was hurling at the neighborhood dogs to get them so worked up!) He was loved and spoiled by everyone who knew him. He had a tumor removed from his jaw, 3 months before he died, that was identified as malignant cancer. When he passed away, he would have been 95.7 years of age in human years. I once read, "All the money in the word cannot buy a single wag of a dog's tail." That was especially true with Scotty Mac. If he liked you, he loved you. If he did not like you, all the coaxing in the world would not sway him. He passed away in my infant son's room, next to the changing table. My wife and I were devastated by his passing.

LIFE: 13 Years, 8 Months, 17 Days

CAUSE OF DEATH: Cancer

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
"There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth.// It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours.// Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, valleys with lush green grass.// When a beloved pet dies , the pet goes to this special place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather.// The old and frail are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again.// They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing.// They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth.// So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up !// The nose twitches !// The ears are up !// The eyes are staring !// And this one suddenly runs from the group !// You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace.// Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.// Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated."

A DOG'S PRAYER
"Treat me kindly, my beloved Master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your "voice" is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest house in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved Master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands."
