Mrs. Nellie Ambrose

Mrs. Nellie Mae "Em" Hartley Ambrose, 76, of Hope Hills, N.C., formerly of Frederick, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, in Hope Mills.

She was the wife of Wilmer Chesson Ambrose Sr., who died June 1993. Born Feb. 22, 1925, in Ivanhoe, Va., she was a daughter of the late Luther Morris and Iva Geneva Walk Hartley.

Mrs. Ambrose was a resident of Frederick for many years and maintained her home on Quinn Road.

She was formerly employed with the Frederick County Department of Social Services, and worked in local real estate for many years. She attended Cotton Methodist Church, Hope Hills.

Mrs. Ambrose and her husband donated the original building for Heartly House of Frederick County in 1981, originally named Hartley House. She and her husband also donated many hours and financial assistance to the program.

Surviving are seven children, Billy Ambrose of Manassas, Va., Danny Ambrose of Frederick, Dickie Ambrose and wife Pattie of Toms River, N.J., Barbara Ratley and husband Jimmy of Fayetteville, N.C., Pat Lowry and husband Curly of Hope Mills, Becky Marshall and husband Don of Frederick, and Debbie Kanode of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; one sister, Frances Elizabeth Yount of Reidsville, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the funeral home.

Entombment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick
