Sgt. Blake W. Evans, of Rockford, Illinois. He was a 2002 graduate of Rockford Guilford High School. He entered the Army in October 2003 and arrived at Fort Campbell Kentucky in January 2004, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He married Shannon Sherwood in Kentucky on August 6, 2005. Blake served his first tour of duty in Iraq from 2005-2006 and was deployed for his second tour in September 2007. He was expected to come home for a leave in June of 2008. He died in Al Jazeera Desert, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Evans' awards and decorations include: Army Achievement Medal (3); Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Infantry Badge; Expert Infantry Badge; Weapons Qualification, M4, expert. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously. Blake is survived by his wife, Shannon; daughters, Adriana and Kylee; parents, Craig and Judy Belk; brother, Scott Evans all of Rockford; mothers-in-law, Peggy Huaracha of Kentucky and Susan Sweitzer of Rockford; nana, Marion DiGiavanni of Caledonia; paternal grandparents, Bob and Mary Belk of Kentucky; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; his extended military family and his three canine companions, Bella, Gracie and Zoie. Blake is predeceased by his nanu, Thomas DiGiavanni, a WWII Veteran and his great grandparents, special aunt, Carmella and many other aunts and uncles.
