U.S. Military Figure. Following his father into naval service, In 1969, he became the commander of swift boat PCF-35, considered to be one of the most hazardous assignments during the Vietnam War. During his tour, he received two Bronze Stars and with his crew received the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. After leaving Vietnam in 1970, he attended law school at the University of North Carolina and joined a law practice after graduation. Elmo was diagnosed in 1983 with a rare cancer that he attributed to his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. He co-authored with his father, the book “My Father, My Son” published in 1986.
