After reading about the life available in the Mississippi Valley in the U.S., he stowed away on the ship "America" from Bremen, Germany. The captain discovered him (Johann) & placed him under the charge of one of the other Ewert families on board. (Either 37 year old Johann and his 34 year old wife Auguste and their 6 children or Louise at age 59 and her two daugthers.)

They landed in New York on December 31, 1872. He moved on to Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois. In 1882 he moved with his wife and three small children to Peabody, Kansas. In February 1906 they moved to Butler County near Burns, Kansas.

He became a Christian in 1890 and was a member of Cassoday M.E. Church. He lived a devoted Christian life until his death.

At the time of his death he had been in the hospital for two weeks.
