My Maternal Grandmother. Carmela Baldacchino was born in Zejtun, Malta, to John Baptist Barbara and Giovanna Orlando, the second of three surviving children. She spent her childhood in Zejtun, until the demise of her maternal Grandfather, Nicola Orlando, which occurred on September 1, 1939, aged 75, when shortly afterwards, her father moved his family to his native village, Tarxien, where they resided next to the All Souls Cemetery.

She married the late Joseph Baldacchino (1929 – 2005), of Cospicua, at the early age of 17, in September 1952, at Tarxien's Parish Church, and mothered three children, Emanuele, John and Miriam.

The couple first resided in Zejtun, but later moved to Steeple Street, Cospicua, where her husband was for years active within the Cospicua Feast Group, of which he was the Founder and President.

A keen cook, Carmela cared for her maternal Aunt, Katerina Agius (1903 – 1993), with whom she and her family later settled in Fgura, for over twenty years. Carmela resided there until the very end, barely leaving her residence, passing hours through cooking, prayer and other house chores. A remarkably quiet person by nature, she passed unexpectedly away at the age of 72, on Friday, November 9, 2007, at Saint Luke's Hospital in Guardamangia, and lies interred inside the same vault of her husband of 52 years, Joseph.
