My Great-Great Grandmother. A native of Zurrieq, Malta, Euphemia was the daughter of Giuseppe Tonna and Rosaria Zammit. Employed with the Orlando's as their servant at their residence in Zejtun, followed the death of his first wife, Caterina, her employer, heartbroken Nicola Orlando married Euphemia, for his children's sake.

Nicola and Euphemia had six children: Catherine, born on September 15, 1903, who entered the Society of the Sacred Heart and formed part of Communities across Japan and Canada, who later left the Society due to health reasons; Joseph, born on November 24, 1904, who died shortly after his birth; Carmelo, born on July 22, 1906, who died at the young age of 7; Teresa, born on February 5, 1908, also a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart, whose memory remains very vividly alive in Malta, Japan and Korea where she worked for almost 50 years; Maria, born on April 9, 1910, likewise a professed member of the Society of the Sacred Heart; and Marcello, born on February 14, 1012, who emigrated to Australia following his marriage and died there in Merrylands in 1995.

Despite being unable to write or read and possessing no accountancy skills, Euphemia managed a grocery shop next to her residence in Zejtun, which she ran beautifully. She would buy a sack or two of sugar, divide it into portions and sell it. Catherine, the eldest child, and herself used to rise very early and bake bread for the early shoppers. Teresa and Maria were only allowed to help when they reached a reasonable age. Meantime, their contribution was lace making.

Euphemia passed away at her residence, No. 8, Strada Marsacirocco in Zejtun on February 17, 1933, aged 86, after being bedridden for a number of years and was laid to rest in the Crypt of the Holy Rosary beneath the Parish Church of Zejtun.
