Poogan is the namesake for "Poogan's Porch" one of downtown Charleston's favorite restaurants ~ visited by locals, tourists and celebrities alike.
Poogan was a scruffy neighborhood dog who enjoyed spending his time wandering from porch to porch alternately lounging around and begging for table scraps. He was a good ol', down-home, Southern porch dog.
In 1976, Poogan, left behind by former residents of the neighborhood, became the guardian of the newly opened restaurant and presided over the renovation process. It was decided that since Poogan enjoyed the porch so much and that it was HIS spot the restaurant should therefore bear his name - "POOGAN'S PORCH". When the doors opened for business he greeted the first customers. The restaurant's family cherished him and in his honor, the owners named the restaurant after him and his favorite resting spot.
He died of natural causes in 1979 and the building is his monument.
Poogan is deeply loved and missed to this day and rumor has it that he is "seen" from time to time around the restaurant - the place he loved best and called home. Also "seen" from time to time is Zoe - a former elderly resident of the former home on Queen Street.
Little Poogan is interred in the front courtyard of the restaurant.
