Lawrence E. "Larry" Leigey, 76, of Karthaus died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Philipsburg Area Hospital.

He was born May 12, 1922, in Karthaus, a son of the late Alfred and Julia Vermeulen Leigey. On Aug. 31, 1946, he married Dolly C. Harbach, who survives at home.

An Army veteran, he served during World War II as a sergeant with the 376th Infantry, 94th Division, Company D in the European Theater.

He was a construction worker. He also was a forest fire warden for 35 years and served as a volunteer for the Karthaus Food Bank for 13 years. From 1945 to 1956 he had been a musician with the Merry Mountaineers.

He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Karthaus.

He was 42-year member of Operating Engineers Local 66. He was a member of Leigey-Renaud Post 8386 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Frenchville, Mosquito Creek Sportsmen's Association, National Rifle Association and the Quehanna Lions Club, and a life member of the Karthaus Volunteer Fire Company.

He was an avid hunter and gardener.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Donna L. Lucas of Karthaus and Judith A. Young of LaJose; a son, Ronald S. Sr. of Frenchville; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. A son, Richard, died in 1955.

He was the last of his generation.

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. today at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Karthaus.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. today at the church, with the Rev. Donna Wolfinger officiating.

Burial will be in Keewaydin Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the honor squad of the Leigey-Renaud VFW Post 8386.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bennett and Houser Funeral Home Inc., Clearfield.
