Elias was the son of Merrill and Orrin Babcock Cooper, who are buried in this cemetery. Some of Elias's brothers and sisters also are buried here: Lydia R, Speedy A and Nathaniel E all by this stone, and Jason elsewhere in this cemetery.

It is not known if Elias was born in Vermont or in Quebec as he was born the same year the family came from Hero Island, Vermont, 1830, moving with two "waggon-loads of stuff" (per Robert Seller unused notes and his History book) and they settled in Elgin Township, Huntingdon County, Lot 10 of the Clergy Reserve, in the 4th Concession.

Elias was a farmer and apparently never married.
