Joseph S. Burkhart served in the Civil War for about 9 months in the closing of the conflict. He acquired a thorough knowledge of the Bible and a love for his Lord by reading the Scriptures to his aged grandmother, whose eyesight had failed her. He was elected 1868 to the ministry of Westmont Church of the Brethren (a German Baptist Church commonly known as Dunkard Church).
