DeWayne Thomas Bates died peacefully Friday morning at his home in Bismarck, N.D. He was born in Bozeman on Oct. 11, 1975, to Wayne and Theresa (Wald) Bates. He was the youngest of four children and he was a kid at heart. As a child, he enjoyed playing with and treasured the many toys he was given throughout his childhood.
DeWayne was a very compassionate person who never had a bad word to say about anyone. He loved all those he met and was always making an effort to please those around him. DeWayne was very outgoing and his main objective in life was to help other people. He loved going to his relatives' farms in North Dakota and his biggest passion was attending family gatherings and getting together with close friends. DeWayne was a very talkative person who always made an extra effort to stop in and visit with family and friends whenever he got the chance. He also enjoyed helping the elderly people in his neighborhood by shoveling their walks, mowing their lawns and running small errands for them. From a young age throughout high school, he was an altar server at St. John's Catholic Church.
DeWayne attended Emerson and Whittier Elementary schools, East Junior High School and later graduated from Butte High School in 1994. He was active in wrestling, football, Young Life, DARE and the Montana Teen Institute Organization. He also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors hunting and fishing.
In January of 1995, DeWayne enlisted in the Army, where he served for three years in Fort Hood, Texas. During this time, he participated in Operation Desert Strike and received the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. He was also a member of the National Guard from 1998 to 2003.
DeWayne later attended Dawson Community College in Glendive, Mont., for two years and was proud to graduate from the Police Academy in Devil's Lake, N.D., in 2001. He served as a volunteer firefighter at the Race Track Fire Department, a van driver and volunteer at the Evergreen Healthcare, a member of the 15-90 Search and Rescue, and he found great enjoyment in being an umpire for Mile High Little League.
Up until the time of his death, DeWayne was employed in various law enforcement jobs, which include being Sheriff in Treasure County in Hysham, Mont., from August 2003 to June 2004. He loved writing poetry and just recently completed writing a book about his life. Memories and photos were a very important part of DeWayne's life.
DeWayne was preceded in death by his grandparents, Emma and Thaddeus Bates, and Katherine and Markus Wald; aunts and uncles, Phyllis Wald, Weyman Bates, and Jim Wald; and cousins, Mary, Steve, Gerard, Joseph, Mickey, Tommy and Curt.
He is survived by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Stephanie and Roger Kazmierczak of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Robin and Zachery Jensen of Butte; his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Cindi Bates, Jr. of Kent, Wash.; nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much, Brandon, Markell, and Edward Kazmierczak, Keith and Amanda Garrett, Christopher Garrett, Tia and Taja Jensen, Mandi Bates, and Corey and Melanie Calcut; greatnieces, Olivia and Haley Garrett; great-nephew, Caleb Calcut; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins from Montana, North Dakota and Georgia; and his special companion and beloved dog, Cheyenne.
"DeWayne was our beloved son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend. A lost soul here on earth has chosen to join our Lord and the rest of our Heavenly Family. He is at peace now. We are all grieving our loss of DeWayne. Always a friend. Always willing to help — a huge heart — he will be sadly missed by all. May he rest in peace." DeWayne's remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home where friends may call beginning Tuesday at 4 p.m. Vigil services will follow at 7 p.m. Prayers will be recited Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, proceeding to St. John's Catholic Church, where Liturgy of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ed Courtney as Celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
