Lenny Bay, 85, died Thursday morning, March 30, 2006, in St. James Healthcare.

Lenny was born in Hibbing, Minn., on May 30, 1920, to Emil and Helen Bay and moved to Butte at a young age. After graduating from Butte High School, he served on the USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to Butte and worked for the Butte Brewery for a short time. He then was a deputy sheriff for Silver Bow County Sheriff's Department and later a bailiff, until his retirement in 1982. On May 30, 1943, he married Ethel DeLong in Alameda, Calif. Lenny was well known for his bronze statues, which he sculptured out of wax and then formed into bronze. His attention to the smallest detail was astounding.

Lenny is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ethel of Butte; daughter and son-in-law, Leah and James Zolynski of Whitehall; son and daughter-in-law, Lenny and Rosita Bay of San Antonio; grandchildren, Jim and Jodi Zolynski, Michelle and Corey Radtke, Hallie and Kelly Scharping, Chris and Colleen Bay, Marcus Bay, and Sairah Bay; great-grandchildren, Whitney and Tausha Zolynski, and Isaac Radtke; physician, Dr. Jake Taverna and his staff; and his special friends, Pinky and Andrea Lynch and John Mazzola.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leo Bay; and sister, Leona Ferris.

In accordance with Lenny's wishes, his remains have been cremated and no services are planned. Private interment of ashes will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Memorials: charity of the donor's choice.
