Funeral servics for William H. Bliss, 72, of Tahlequah will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday Jan, 19, 2011 at the City of Tahlequah Armory Municipal Center. Formal visitation will be held from 6:oopm to 8:00 pm Tuesday 18, at Green Country Funeral Home. Pallbearers include, Dr. Sammie Crosby, Judge Mark Dobbins, Jack Dobbins, Ray Hammons, Dave Wasson and Kelly Garrett. Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Jim Brixey, Dr. Bill Elliot, Steve Smith, Aaron Elliot, Bill Grisby, Dr. Jack Dobbins and all retired and active members of the Tahlequah Fire Department. Interment will follow in the Tahlequah City Cemetery under the care of Green Country Funeral Home.
William H. (Bill) Bliss, was born March 16, 1938, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He was the third
of four children born to the union of C.F. (June) Bliss, Jr. And Ethel Bliss. He was raised in and around Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He passed away on Friday January 14, 2011.
After Bill graduated from Tahlequah High School he attended Northeastern State University. It was there that he met the love of his life, Joyce Kaye Reed. They were married in Tulsa, Oklahoma on November 6, 1959. The marriage remained intact over fifty-one years and produced two children, Angie Bliss - Fanning and Bill Bliss, Jr. Bill was later blessed with two granddaughters, Meghan Bliss and Jessie Bliss, both of Tahlequah. Bill was a devoted husband,
a wonderful father and an unbelievable grandfather, always there for his family and always knowing the right thing to say or do.
After his graduation from Northeastern, Bill and Joyce moved to Oklahoma City, where he attended law school at Oklahoma City University during the evenings and worked as a teacher at Central High School during the days. When school was not in session, Bill worked as a clerk for the Oklahoma Supreme Court studying and developing a love for the law.
In 1965, Bill completed law school and passed his bar exam. The family returned to Tahlequah, where he opened a private law practice. After a short time, his commitment to the community led Bill to seek a position with the District Attorney's Office. He served as an Assistant District Attorney until his appointment to the position of Associate District Judge in 1971. In 1973 he attained the position of District Judge, serving Cherokee, Adair, Muskogee, Sequoyah and Wagoner counties. He occupied that position until his retirement in January 1995, after serving approximately twenty-three years on the bench.
Following his judicial retirement, Bill returned to private practice in Tahlequah. In 1999 he was appointed to serve as Attorney for the City of Tahlequah, a capacity in which he served until July 2003. In addition he returned to the classroom accepting a part-time position, teaching criminal law courses at Northeastern State University. Until May 2008, Bill served as an Administrative Judge for the Child Support Division of the Department of Human Services for Sequoyah and Cherokee Counties.
Always active in the community, Bill served in many other capacities as well. Some of his fondest memories included serving as a Tahlequah Firefighter for over twenty-two years, serving six years in the National Guard, volunteering as a weather spotter for Cherokee County Emergency Management and serving on a number of boards and committees.
No matter the task Bill loved his work and loved his community. He truly enjoyed helping others in any way that he could. He never turned away a person in need and treated all with dignity and respect. When not spending time with his family or working Bill loved the outdoors. He greatly enjoyed spending his free time hunting and fishing.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, June and Ethel Bliss, his father and mother-in-law Leo and Faye Reed and his brother-in-law Nick Purkey.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, of the home; his daughter Angie and her husband, Jerry Fanning of Tahlequah; his son, Bill and his wife Sandy of Tahlequah; his two granddaughters,
Meghan Bliss and Jessica Bliss both of Tahlequah; his brother, Colonel Fred Bliss and his wife Dorothy of Muskogee; his brother, Dr. Bryce Bliss and his wife Jeanie of Gore; his sister, Susan Purkey of Tahlequah; and thirteen nieces and nephews.
