Actor. He was best known for playing Father Francis Mulcahy on both the long-running CBS sitcom "M*A*S*H" from 1972 to 1983 and its spin-off "AfterMASH" from 1983 to 1985. He graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, with a B.A. in drama. He appeared in a variety of regional productions, and eventually a number of Off-Broadway productions, such as "The Hostage at One Sheridan Square." His Broadway debut came in "Beyond the Fringe," a British revue. He left the New York stage and went to Hollywood where he would gain work in numerous television series such as "The Andy Griffith Show," "Hogan's Heroes," "Gomer Pyle USMC," "That Girl," and "Nichols." In 1972 he landed the role of Father Francis Mulcahy on the Korean War sitcom "M*A*S*H," which would make him well known among television viewers. He continued this role on the series and its spin-off "AfterMASH" until 1985. During and after the show's run, he also worked in such shows as "Columbo," "Good Times," "The Love Boat," "Murder, She Wrote," Diagnosis: Murder," "Mad About You", and "Days of Our Lives." During his career, he also appeared in such films as "The Fortune Cookie" (1966), "The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell" (1968), "The Shakiest Gun in the West" (1968), "With Six You Get Eggroll" (1968), and "Hearts of the West" (1975). He passed away from non-lung small cell carcinoma.
