William Bruce Walker, 86, suffered a heart attack and passed away on March 12, 2012 at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. Bruce retired from a sales career in appliance, soft drink, and manufacturing industries. He also retired as a Captain in the Naval Reserve. His passion in life was the U.S. military. He was active and held leadership positions in a number of organizations including MOAA, Retired Military Intelligence Officers, and TROA. He began his military career as a First Lieutenant and served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947. Bruce was born in Chicago on July 4, 1925 to William Russell Walker and Marion Tillou Walker. He graduated from DePauw College in Greencastle, Indiana in 1948. He married his Morgan Park High School sweetheart, Loraine McClelland, on June 14, 1946 in Chicago and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary before she passed away in Wheaton in July 2009. Upon Bruce's discharge from the Navy after World War II, the Walkers lived in Chicago. In 1956, they moved with their three young sons to Wheaton where they have continued to live except for two years when Bruce was employed in southern California. For years, Bruce and Loraine would host midshipman from the Glenview Naval Air Station for Wheaton's 4th of July Parade and a barbeque in the Walker's backyard. Bruce could always be called upon for presentations at the local ROTC events. He was a long time member and served in leadership positions of the First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton. He inspired The Navy Thanksgiving Project, a long time tradition of bringing sailors from Great Lakes Naval Training Center to the Presbyterian Church for a brief service followed by Thanksgiving dinner with members of their families. Bruce also assisted with local Veterans' Affairs activities. Bruce was recognized by the community for voluntarily snow blowing the sidewalks of neighbors when they lived on East Willow Street in Wheaton. Bruce was the reunion committee chairman for his Morgan Park High School Reunion committee for several years, and remained active as the Activities Committee Chairman after moving to Wyndemere in 2005. In addition to his wife, Loraine, Bruce was predeceased by his parents; his brother Keith and nephew Gary Walker. He is survived by sons, Bruce Alan (Priscilla) of Palisade, Colorado, Neil (Dianne) of Elgin, and Scott (Judy) of Lombard; grandchildren, Sarah and Keith of Lombard, and Matthew, of Breckenridge, Colorado, as well as a step-grandson, Scott (Candy); step-great-grandchildren, Casey and Jesse, of Santa Clarita, California; nephews, Dave and Steve Walker, Tom and Bob Ritsch, Dave Kane-Ritsch; sister-in-law, Wanda (Conrad) Zamka, Jane (Paul) Ritsch; and fiancé, Marion Skipworth. Visitation Thursday 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home 430 E. Roosevelt Rdad, Wheaton (1 blk east of Naperville Road).
