Premier of Quebec. Born Joseph-Adélard Godbout in Saint-Éloi, Quebec, he studied agriculture at the Séminaire de Rimouski, Ecole d'agriculture de Ste-Anne-de-la-Pocatière, and Amherst College. In 1918 he returned as a professor at the Ecole d'agriculture de Ste-Anne-de-la-Pocatière where he taught until 1930. In 1929 he was elected to Quebec's National Assembly for the l'Islet district and in 1930 was appointed Minister of Agriculture on the cabinet of Quebec Premier Alexandre Taschereau. Following Taschereau's resignation in 1936, Godbout was appointed the 15th Premier of Quebec in his place, a post he only held for two months before he lost his assembly seat during elections. In 1939 he was re-elected to the National Assembly where he served until 1948 and again served as Premier of Quebec from 1939 until 1944. In 1949 he was appointed to the Senate of Canada, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent, where he served until his death at the age of 63 from injuries suffered after a fall in his home.
