SUBJECT: DEATH OF DEPUTY MARIA CECILIA ROSA

On Tuesday, March 28, 2006, Deputy Maria Rosa, assigned to the Inmate Reception Center, was found shot in the City of Long Beach and subsequently died from her injuries.

Shortly after 6 A.M., a Long Beach Police personnel responded to the 2900 block of South Eucalyptus Avenue regarding a person down. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Rosa in front of the residence suffering from a gunshot wound. Rosa was immediately transported to a local hospital where she, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries.

Frank Gonzalez and his 21-year-old accomplice, Justin Ashley Flint, apparently had been riding their bicycles looking to rob someone that March 26 morning when they saw Rosa in the 2900 block of Eucalyptus Avenue.

Rosa, who was leaving her girlfriend's house to go to work at the Inmate Reception Center at Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles, was loading things in her trunk when she was accosted by the pair, and Gonzalez demanded her wallet.

Rosa reached into her trunk for her service weapon, but it jammed as she pointed it at Gonzalez.

Gonzalez fired two rounds with a .22-caliber handgun, and the two sped away.

Justin Flint has been sentenced to 29 to life and Frank Gonzalez has been sentenced to the death penalty.
