U.S. Marine Corps, retired
Born January 26, 1920, in Graettinger, Iowa, John rejoined his beloved wife, the late Betty J. Cunningham, on July 22, 2006, surrounded by his family while at home in Sacramento.
He will be dearly missed by his children; John Cunningham III (Paula) of South Lake Tahoe and Joanne Garcia (Joe) of Rancho Murieta and grandchildren Jakob and Justin. Born in Graetinger to Agnes and John Cunningham, who was a Methodist minister, he moved to Sacramento to become a gold miner in Sierra County. He eventually obtained his bachelor's degree in accounting and became an accountant for SMUD.
He proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine and was the first Commander of the 2nd Marine Corps Company Reserves, based in Sacramento. His WWII campaigns included Iwo Jima and Guam, which earned him two Purple Hearts as Tank Commander. He retired as a Major.
He was a civic minded person and was involved in many organizations, including Senior Gleaners, Call 3 program, Warrior Boosters, Little League, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts, and was a benefactor to over 100 charity organizations. He was responsible for bringing the Toys for Tots program to Sacramento. He enjoyed camping with his family, poker with the boys, trains and his favorite chair!
Friends are welcome at W.F. GORMLEY & SONS, 2015 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento, on Friday, July 28, for visitation at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at Gormley's at 11:00 AM.
Interment with honors will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery.
