After playing some small roles in "Coronation Street", Peter was cast to play "Bert Tilsley" Husband of Ivy and father of Brian. Peter was openly gay, and had a few "Run-ins" with the local police, who, in those days, were under instruction to arrest anyone who was that way. He suffered a stroke while waiting for one of the Trials, that stemmed from his lifestyle. He continued acting on "Coronation Street" hiding his stroke behind a storyline that had him injured in an accident. He had two heart attacks and another stroke on 20th October 1983, which he didn't survive.
