James Barton was the Sheriff for Los Angeles County in California for five years. He was killed in the line of duty at age 47. He was killed along with Constable William Little and Deputy Charles Daly. They were attempting to arrest members of the notorious Flores-Daniels Gang. The Gang ambushed the Officers. 52 members of the gang was arrested, 18 were hung. Sheriff Barton was an Army Veteran of the Mexican-American War.

Him and his Posse were buried in unmarked Graves.
