As is normal for boys, one of them would neglect their duty and would take John's shirt, leaving him without. He finally came up with the perfect solution to his problem, after getting his shirt ready for Sunday meeting, he picked up a piece of coal and placed a large "X" on the back of his shirt. He no longer had a missing shirt for Sunday. People laughed over this action, and he was jokingly called "X" from then on.
