He was a participant in the Lee-Peacock feud in Texas and was later sheriff of Colfax County, New Mexico. He reportedly died from the delayed effects of an old bullet wound. Bowman reportedly engaged in a friendly fast draw competition with the notorious gunman Clay Allison. Bowman was the faster draw and according to the story, taught Allison how to improve his technique.
