Born in Sewickley, (Pittsburgh) Pa. on June 18, 1842. Served under Gen. J.D. Cox in the Civil War. Police officer in Central City, Colorado 1865. Elected Sheriff of Laramie County, Wyoming 1870, re-elected as Sheriff of Laramie County, Wyoming 1872. Served as Supt. of Wyoming Branch of Rocky Mountain Detective Association from 1874 until 1907. Re-elected Sheriff of Laramie County, Wyoming 1876. Appointed Marshal and Chief of Police of City of Cheyenne, WY. Appointed United States Marshal for Wyoming June 1885; served as U.S. Marshal until Wyoming became a state 1890. Served as Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal under Joe P. Rankin until 1900. Appointed again as Chief of Cheyenne by Mayor E.F. Stahle 1893. Maintained a detective agency in Cheyenne until 1910. A member of the Super Posse that were after the Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and others, 1900. Appointed Warden of Wyoming Penitentiary, Laramie, WY Feb. 3, 1900 and served until Dec. 26, 1900. Died in San Antonio, TX May 11, 1916. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Canton, IL.
