Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered as as the 1st Sergeant of Company L, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on September 18, 1861. When 2nd Lieutenant Peter Langstaff resigned in February 1862, Garrett Beekman was promoted to fill the vacancy, receiving his 2nd Lieutenancy on March 15, 1862. He served with Company L through regiment's actions in Virginia in the Spring and Summer of 1862, then was advanced to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Company M in October 1862. His service with Company M took him through the June 1863 Battle of Brandy Station and the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. In August 1862 Captain P. Jones Yorke of Company I was made the Major of the newly formed 2nd New Jersey Cavalry, and Lieutenant Beekman again received a promotion, becoming Captain and commander of Company I on September 23, 1863. He would go on to lead the unit through the end of the war, seeing action in such battles as Haws Shop, Trevallian Station, and Five Forks. He was honorably mustered out July 24, 1865. Four days after his muster out he recieved a commission as Major, which was not acted upon since he was already out of the service.

His wife was Sophia Elizabeth WATTS (burial place, as yet unknown), who after Garrett's death, married Albert K. ORDWAY in 1889.
