Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 4th New Jersey Militia on April 25, 1861, and was mustered in as a Corporal in Company A on April 27, 1861. He served in the defenses of Washington, DC, and during the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on July 31, 1861. He then joined the unit that eventually became the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry, enrolling on August 15, 1861, and being mustered in as Quartermaster Sergeant for Company I on August 29, 1861. He served until he was discharged due to disability at Camp Banks, Virginia on February 20, 1863.
