Roy, my dad's brother, was the second child of Balla (Polston) and Cassius Sullivan. He was born in Kentucky, but spent the first four years growing up in Cincinnati where his mother was a school teacher and his father a meat cutter for Krogers.
In the 1930s his family moved back to south-central Kentucky where he and his brothers, Huston, Earl and Gilbert, worked on the family farm. His sister, Fern was born in 1938 and his mother passed away in 1940. In late 1942, his father remarried and his brother, Huston, joined the army in early 1943. Somewhere around that time or after, Uncle Roy moved in with his grandparents, Asa and Della Polston.
I asked Uncle Roy once to tell me about his grandfather, Asa, and Roy said he'd have never made it without him, that he was the kindest man he ever knew.
By 1951 he had married and started a family of his own. He and his wife had four children, one born in Kentucky and the other three in Indiana. He and his wife divorced and he remarried in 1958.
Throughout his life, Roy was a hard worker. He had learned, during the depression as he grew up, that if you wanted something, you had to work for it. During those years it was on his family farm and then later it was at Bridgeport Brass during the day and farming in the evening and on weekends. He was also active with his church.
Uncle Roy loved his family and he spent many Sundays after church with his children, his grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren. Most times I saw him, he had a hat on that indicated he was the best Pop, best Granddaddy, best Grandpa ever. In his casket was placed a hat that was stitched: Hats Off! It's Pop's Last Top.
