He married Pauline Bryant on March 18, 1951 in Adair County, Kentucky. They had three children, Christine, Joe Edwin, and Charlene. With him being in the service, in the early years the family lived in many different locations, but eventually settled in Morgan County, Indiana.

His December 29, 1976 obituary:

Charles Edward Shipley, 48, Route 1, Nineveh, died at his home Wednesday, December 22 from a gunshot wound. He was employed by Western Electric as a machine operator.

He was born in Brown County on December 28, 1928 to Isaac and Mary Jane (Hedger) Shipley.

Shipley is survived by a son, Joe Edwin Shipley of Route 1, Gosport, and two daughters, Christine Walters of Danville, Illinois [should be Indiana], and Charlene Shipley of Route 2, Morgantown.

He is also survived by two brothers, Mike Shipley of Martinsville, and James Shipley of Whiteland, four sisters, Doris Ross of Franklin, Tinzie Percifield of Nashville, Florence Cave of Trafalgar, and Bernice Anderson of Trafalgar, and two half sisters, Daisy Henderson and Chloe Townsend, both of Arcadia, Indiana.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 27, at Bond’s Funeral Home, Reverend Ray Unger officiating. Burial was in the Shipley Cemetery on Jackson Branch Road.
