Professional Hockey Player, Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. Also known as "Vanderbilt" and "The Bomber." A native of Duluth, Minnesota, Williams played the position of Forward for the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins from 1961 to 1969, the Minnesota North Stars from 1969 to 1971, the California Golden Seals from 1971 to 1972, and the Washington Capitals from 1974 to 1976. He retired from hockey following the 1975 to 1976 hockey season with the New Haven Nighthawks of the AHL. His total NHL career consisted of 663 games played, 161 goals scored, 269 assists, and 430 points. Williams also played hockey as a member of the United States National Team from 1958 to 1959, and the United States Olympic Team from 1959 to 1960. In 1960, he assisted his team in the winning goal against the Soviet Union, at the Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California. The team beat the Russians 3-2 and they were awarded Olympic gold medals. After his hockey career, Williams worked for a pipe manufacturing company. His son Robert, who died in 1987, also played hockey. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota, in 1981. He died at age 51, from a heart attack.
