Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. He was a member of the 1960 United States Olympic Hockey Team that won the Gold Medal at the Winter Games held at Squaw Valley, California. He was the middle sibling of the three Christian brothers-Gordy, Roger and Billy-who each became accomplished Olympic athletes. He began his association with hockey during his early youth, captivated by the sport, along with his younger brother Billy, he spent hours daily on outdoor rinks, often using makeshift shin pads and sticks. He distinguished himself while in high school and led his team to the state tournament, continuing his athletics with his hometown team the Warroad Lakers. Along with Billy, he secured a place on the 1960 United States Olympic Hockey Team (their older brother Gordy was a member of the 1956 US Olympic Hockey Team which won a silver medal) and joined a roster which contained the best America had to offer in the sport, including the Cleary brothers (Bill and Bob), John Mayasich, and goaltender Jack McCartan. The 1960 squad which became known as the "First Miracle on Ice" team and later the "Forgotten Miracle", (following the United States Gold Medal-winning Olympic team in 1980), entered the tournament as an underdog. On their own country's turf, Team USA defeated Canada and Russia, the latter with Roger Christian assisting his brother twice with goals, and in the contest against the Czechoslovakia team, Roger Christian emerged a hero, scoring 4 goals, as United States captured their first Olympic Gold Medal in the sport. In 1964 he was again chose for the United States Olympic Hockey team, with the Americans finishing fifth at the Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria. After his Olympic career, he established along with Gordy and Billy a company which manufactured hockey sticks. He was enshrined into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989. His nephew, Dave Christian, was a member of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" United States Gold Medal winning Olympic hockey team.
