Richard Griffith, son of Elizabeth and Joseph Griffith, was born in Knoxville, Scott Co., Tennessee, August 23, 1844, and departed this life March 13, 1925 at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 20 days, at the home his son, J.J. Griffith, of Belle Plaine.
He grew to manhood in Knoxville and at the age of 17 volunteered in the union army and served in Company F Infantry until the close of the war.
After the close of the war, he moved to Monticello, Kentucky and on September 5, 1871 was united to Lucinda Jane Koger. To them were born four children, two girls and two boys: J.J. Griffith and Ella Shade, of Belle Plaine, G.C. Griffith of Apache, Okla., and Florence Stewart, Mulvane, Kansas. Besides these he leaves two step-daughters, Mrs. W.R. Nye of Belle Plaine and Mrs. Jennie Thomas of Phoenix, Arizona. All were with him at the time of his death except Mrs. Thomas and G.C. Griffith. Besides these he is survived by 27 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, 4 sisters: Mrs. John Cooper, of Blackwell, Okla., Mrs. Tennie Cornwell of Wichita, Mrs. Jack Wilfoung and Mrs. Will Carter, of Belle Plaine, Kansas and two brothers, Mr. Yewell Griffith and C.C. Griffith, of Belle Plaine, and a host of friends.
He and his family came to Kansas in 1874 and settled near Belle Plaine, where they lived until the year 1909 when they moved to Apache, Okla and lived there two years when Mrs. Griffith's health failed, causing them to come back to the old home near Belle Plaine where she passed away Sept. 5, 1911. Since her death, he made his home with his son, J.J. Griffith of Belle Plaine.
In early life, he united with the Presbyterian church but after coming to Kansas united with the Christian Church of this place and has lived a consistent christian life. During his illness he bore his affliction with great patience. His last days were spent in praising God and was ready for the call. His companion was his bible and few could quote more of its passages. May he forever rest in peace for he has fought a good fight, has finished his course and kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for him a crown of righteousness.
The funeral was held from the Church of Christ chapel in this city Sunday afternoon, March 15, 1925 at 2:30. Elder A.J. Rhodes, of Mulvane conducting the services. A quartette consisting of Leta Hatfield, Seva Crews, Solon Hatfield and Louis Reitz sang three songs, "Nearer My God To Thee," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Waiting by the River." There were beautiful and many floral offerings.
Interment took place at the Belle Plaine cemetery.
